Secretary (2002)

<>Secretary<> is a queer little movie. It’s certainly unusual, both with the subject matter in general, the characters more specifically, and the background as well. The movie is about a cutter (you know, girl who cuts herself) who is released from a mental facility and gets a job as a secretary at a solo law firm. The attorney, played brilliantly by James Spader, is just as quirky and odd as his new employee. Let me just take a second to say that I am a big fan of James Spader, and his performance here impressed me. It seems, and I could be wrong, that Spader plays himself in movies. That isn’t a bad thing if you are interesting, sort of like Jack Nicholson. In this movie, Spader actually puts forth an incredible acting job. He’s not playing himself, he’s playing a real character. This isn’t a bad film, but it’s not one that moved me, touched me, or slipped a finger into my mouth. It is one I recommend seeing, though, just for the experience of seeing it, as it features an unusual story and it certainly beats the usual shlock Hollywood puts out. Plus, director Steven Shainberg just went hog wild at the end with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s nudity.
